STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) are infections that are passed on during unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex with an infected partner. Some STIs can also be passed on by skin-to-skin contact.  Common STIs include Chlamydia, Genital Herpes, Gonorrhoea and Genital Warts. Less common STIs include Syphilis, HIV and Hepatitis B. The risk of getting an STI is increased by a number of factors: if you do not use condoms, if you have had multiple partners or changed partners in the past 12 months, if you or your partner share injecting equipment (syringes and needles) or if you or your partner have had another STI. STI symptoms depend on the type of infection, though in many cases there are no symptoms- that is why it is wise to get regular sexual health checks with your doctor or local sexual health clinic.
